We talked to several places by then but got a chance to talk to Patrick at Foundation House. It was refreshing to talk to him as Patrick really seemed to care about the success of our son. They know what these young men need and they work tirelessly to provide it. I feel like there is always someone there to guide my young adult son in a way that a parent can no longer do. Most importantly, they care…they really do care and understand our children. The fact that Foundation House is centered in Portland contributes to its success.

Sober living homes are maintained through fees, and residents can usually stay as long as they want. Unlike many halfway houses, sober homes are not monitored by state agencies. The best facilities employ compassionate staff and enforce strict rules that support the recovery process. All of a sober house’s residents are expected to pursue better health and a substance-free life. However, some halfway houses are designed to reduce drug relapse rates for high-risk individuals leaving incarceration. I have been struggling with my alcoholism and have been in and out of AA for over 20 years. I’ve been through 2 hospital treatment programs and this is my 4th time at being in a sober living environment type house. The first home I was in I had a major panic attack and left after 5 hours. At the third one I managed to stay 16 days, but I was miserable and wanted to leave on the first day. The Lynn House is my 4th house, but the first one I have called home. I have been here for only 6 days but have not wanted to leave.

Life in Oxford House residences

Laura, a New York native, began her career working with adolescent boys and their families after receiving her Master’s in Social Work from Florida Atlantic University. Laura is a NARM® Practitioner specializing in treating complex trauma, substance use, personality disorders and mood disorders, and Laura has a strong background in Family Systems Therapy. Laura brings her clinical expertise and her personal experience as a woman in recovery to Release by utilizing compassion, intentionality and integrity. Which sets the standards for all sober housing in the Commonwealth. Both houses are also staffed by full-time, live-in managers and assistants. Free weekly online support groups and recovery meetings for individuals and family members affected by substance use disorder. Each group is designed to support, inspire and empower one another to better cope and live life to the fullest. After twelve months in a highly regarded long-term facility in New Jersey, our 22 year old son still required a supervised but supportive program in his recovery and induction into independent living.

Routine and personal growth will help residents take their minds off substance abuse and establish a better state of well-being. In addition to a job, most residents will also pursue educational opportunities and/or establish new, sober hobbies. Regular meetings are a mandatory component in a sober living house. These meetings allow recovering individuals to check with each other, assign chores, and talk through any other necessary topics. Complete sobriety is not only a requirement but a priority in a sober living house, just like the addiction treatment.

They truly care about the young man within, his gifts and talents, and through their process provided him with a safe environment to experience and be open to the feelings of sobriety. He was not alone in the new changes and choices he made for himself. At Foundation House he learned to respect himself and others, be accountable for his actions and desire the discipline it takes to work, volunteer and return to his education. In June of 2008, within hours of a heroin overdose, Chris Herren was released from a hospital and sent back out on the street. Thankfully, friends stepped in to support Chris – emotionally and financially – and helped him get into an extended treatment program to recover from substance use disorder. Chris has been sober since August 1, 2008 and is loving all that a life in recovery offers – fatherhood, friendship and family – while making a difference in the lives of others. Recovery residences are less expensive than living at a rehabilitation facility or detox center because fewer services are offered. But many sober homes require residents to attend support group meetings or participate in 12-step programs or outpatient treatment, which may be an additional cost for residents to consider. The recovery process doesn’t end after 90 days of treatment. The transition back to life outside of rehab is fraught with the potential for relapse.

I go to meetings and I am about to do my 5th step tomorrow. I finally feel like my life is going somewhere and I have found faith in the AA program and in the women I’ve met at The Lynn House. Thanks to the love and support I was given here, I have a new chance at life. This house will forever be a safe place in my heart and I am so very grateful to have had the opportunity to be here. Cleaning of the sober living house allows residents to share accountability and keep their space tidy. Residents will generally take turns fulfilling certain chores. These homes are governed by guidelines that promote long-term sobriety and overall well-being.

Alan Thompson, 58, a Bloomington native, was released from prison last November. He’s one of 10 men living at Oxford House Nova Hayden, a 3,566-square-foot home in a northside Bloomington neighborhood purchased in October 2021. An Austin, Texas, man bought the house for $340,000 and opened the sober living residence with an Oxford House charter. Any recovering woman over the age of 18 is welcome to volunteer at The Lynn House. Some of these include taking a shift at the house, driving women to meetings or helping deliver food from the Food Bank, Second Harvest or Costco. I was and am completely powerless over this disease of alcoholism. I found out about The Lynn House through friends and family. I called and did a phone interview and was blessed with a bed the next day. All the girls and volunteers were very loving, caring, and welcoming from the minute I walked through the front door.

The authors found evidence that 12-step program attendance and social support systems were key components of recovery for residents. Some sober living homes have exercise equipment, fitness areas, recreational space, pools and cookout areas. The homes may also be near an outpatient treatment center or on the campus of residential rehab facility. In NARR homes, the goal is to protect the health of all residents, not to punish the resident experiencing relapse. In Oxford Houses, individuals who relapse cannot return until they complete a 28-day rehab program or complete treatment and demonstrate an ability to continually attend support group meetings. Halfway houses are technically sober living environments, but there are many differences between halfway houses for people transitioning out of incarceration and sober homes for people in recovery from addiction. At North Jersey Recovery Center, we’ll help you transition smoothly with a sober living house. Sober living communities are founded on support, structure, safety, comfort, and compassion. During the recovery process, a safe and stable home environment is crucial. A sober living home is one option that allows you to recover in a community that will support you the entire way.

We believe that Foundation House provided him the opportunities that allowed him the humility, growth and gratitude that makes him the amazing man he is today. Sober living homes are safe, cost-effective, substance-free living environments for individuals in recovery. Sober houses require residents to have already completed treatment and to abstain from alcohol and drug use. I have renewed the most important values of my family, trust and honesty. My son, whoo believed in me, but had his doubts, now speaks openly with me and shares about his life. I am also in a committed, healthy relationship, sharing mutual respect and love with someone who also supports me in my program 100%.

Aftercare resources such as 12-step groups, sober living homes and support for family and friends promote a life rich with rewarding relationships and meaning. That day I entered into the loving and open arms of The Lynn House residents. The day prior I awoke alone with 5 empty wine bottles in the font of me. My bed was the ground I lay upon, hidden behind some bushes in a local park.

I am learning to be grateful and comfortable in my own skin. Thank you to The Lynn House for giving me new hope and a chance for new beginnings. Sober living homes provide a smooth transition for recovering individuals that have completed a treatment program at arecovery center. These homes offer a safe and stable environment to minimize the chances of relapse from occurring. Patrick and the staff champion each young man in their program to be the best they can be whatever their pursuit. We see that he is grateful for the sober life he leads, living on his own, going to a college of his choice on scholarship, working part time, and participating in sports he loves. He has a confidence, self worth, integrity and strong character about him we have never seen before.

He has since purchased four houses through Lean On Me LLC in Bloomington and is branching out in eight other Indiana counties using Oxford House charters, serving as landlord for the independent homes. The Oxford House manual states that charters are granted to people who themselves have beaten addiction. Perry Township Trustee Dan Combs and his staff looked into the Oxford House model when residents started coming to the trustee’s office seeking money to help pay rent. He said state law is clear about the township’s obligations as far as rental assistance, and he doesn’t think think Oxford House residents qualify for aid. That means they are protected under the federal Fair Housing Act and must be granted reasonable accommodations to support their recovery and be treated as single families for zoning purposes. Josh Riley is the Oxford House regional outreach worker who oversees the 17 women and 32 men living in Bloomington’s six houses — named Sage, Maya, Libra, Eden Coe, Nova Hayden and Ryder — and two in Columbus. Oxford House residents work and pay their own way, taking on duties and expenses.
